After a couple of days around Dublin, sightseeing and researching family history, it was exciting to set off on our adventure around Ireland.
Our first stop was Powerscourt Estate in County Wicklow, and we couldn't have been happier with the outcome. Here, Rosalie was given access to the private cemetery and we were able to locate the grave of at least 2 of her ancestors buried here. According to the list of burials in this cemetery there are several more, however the headstones are so worn, it is difficult to decipher the names.
There is a church within the walls and we know that the family worshipped here as well as having all the children baptised at the font.
It was very exciting and we felt rather special being given this privilege. The Powerscourt gardens are magnificent, so for those in the group who wished to wander the grounds there was also lots to see and the beauty of the Wicklow mountains is awesome.
Rosalie has more information on her ancestors to develop and also is able to appreciate the environment in which they lived. Makes you wonder why they left, unless it was the famine that drove them out.
Glendalough was also an awesome place, with the ruins to the monastery being easily accessible and very intriguing. A couple of musicians, Liz O'Riordan and Pat Connery playing the pipes and Irish drum capped off a beautiful day, so we headed to our accommodation in Kilkenny listening to this wonderful duo on the CD I bought!
More exploring of ancestral sites awaits us..........
